Joan Mitchell, the painting of two worlds, la pittura dei due mondi (book) French/Italian. 232 pages. softcover. 2009. Very good condition. 46 color illustrations. Like new. Publisher Skira.
Joan Mitchell (1925–1992) was an American artist who worked primarily in painting and printmaking, and also used pastel and made other works on paper. She was actively involved in the New York School of Artists in the 1950s. Originally from Chicago, she is associated with the American Abstract Expressionist movement, although she lived much of her career in France.
Mitchell’s emotionally intense style and brushwork were influenced by 19th-century Post-Impressionist painters, particularly Henri Matisse. Memories of landscapes inspired his compositions; she told art critic Irving Sandler, “I carry my landscapes with me.” His later work was informed and constrained by his declining health.
Mitchell was one of the few female painters of her era to achieve critical and public acclaim. His paintings, drawings and published prints can be seen in major museums and collections around the world and have sold for record prices. In 2021, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Baltimore Museum of Art co-curated a comprehensive retrospective of his work.
In her will, Mitchell provided for the creation of the Joan Mitchell Foundation, a nonprofit corporation that provides grants and scholarships to working artists and preserves her archives.
